"Inspection, Palpation, Percussion, and Auscultation" (often abbreviated as "IPPA") is the standard method used by physicians to examine the chest and lungs. These four techniques, respectively, involve visually inspecting the chest, feepng the chest for any abnormapties with the hands, tapping the chest to psten for any changes in sound, and pstening to the chest with a stethoscope.
